Herbert Hugh Bockman was born to William and Martha Bockman on October 3, 1927 in Faith, South Dakota. Herbert lived on a ranch that his father homesteaded in 1916. When Herbert was nine years old and after several years of droughts, they moved to Springfield, South Dakota. The family lived here for four years before moving to the Milford and Superior area. In 1952, Herbert, his brother Irving and his parents purchased the Higgins Ranch west of Milford, where they could raise cattle and farm. Flying airplanes was his favorite hobby after earning his pilot license when he was sixteen years old. Herbert entered the US Airforce in 1945, hoping to get to fly, but the war ended before this was accomplished.

Herbert married Betty Duis in July, 1970 and they made their home in Milford. They were blessed with two sons, Daniel and David. When Irving retired, Herb's family bought out the business.

Herb was a faithful member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake for eighty-two years.

Herb passed away on January 14, 2024 at his home in Milford at ninety-six years of age. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Martha Bockman; brothers, Bill, Irving and Art and sister, Irene Gosch.

Herb is survived by his wife, Betty Bockman; sons, Daniel Bockman (Melissa) and David Bockman (Amy); grandchildren, Kyle, Courtney, Jacob, Jesse and Sam; as well as many nieces and nephews.
