Thomas Madigan

May 19, 1946 — Jun 9, 2026

Thomas “Tom” Madigan passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family in Sioux Falls, South Dakota on June 9, 2026.

Tom was born on May 19, 1946, in Carroll, Iowa, to Thomas W. and Marguerite Madigan. Known as “Tommy” during his childhood, he joined six siblings and was raised on a busy family farm near Maple River, Iowa. He graduated from Kuemper High School, attended college, and proudly served his country in the Army National Guard.

On October 5, 1968, Tom married the love of his life, Linda Vasos. The same year, he began his career with Northwest Bell Telephone Company as a lineman. Together, Tom and Linda built a life centered on family and were blessed with three children, all of whom brought him immense pride and joy.

A lifelong learner with an unwavering work ethic, Tom enjoyed a successful career in telecommunications. He retired from Qwest Communications in 2001 as a Regional Manager overseeing network operations across west-central and northwest Iowa. Retirement allowed Tom and Linda to divide their time between Okoboji, Iowa, and Venice, Florida—a perfect arrangement for someone who loved being on and around the water.

Tom enjoyed many sports throughout his life, including softball, tennis, and sailing, but golf was his passion. He was also an avid cyclist and participated in several RAGBRAI rides. Dedicated to serving others, Tom sat on several boards and remained actively involved in his communities in both Iowa and Florida. He valued friendship, embraced new experiences, and lived a full and rewarding life.

Tom will be deeply missed by his loving family: daughter Jen Nicholson (Brian) of Woodbury, Minnesota; son Patrick Madigan (Gillian) of Urbandale, Iowa; and daughter Nicole Simmons (Ryan) of Clive, Iowa. He was a proud grandfather to Drew and Madigan Nicholson; Hallie, Neil, and Colin Madigan; and Tommy Simmons. He is also survived by many cherished relatives and friends.

Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Madigan; his sister, Mary Lou Julich; and his parents, Thomas W. and Marguerite Madigan.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, August 29th at the Maser Monarch Lodge in Okoboji from 1:30-4:30. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital and Catholic Charities. Online condolences may be left at Turner Jenness Funeral Home.
