A Funeral Service for Norbert Bierstedt, age 93, of Spirit Lake will be held on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 2:00pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Spirit Lake. Visitation will take place prior to service from 1:00-2:00pm at the church in Spirit Lake. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in Spirit Lake.
Norbert Herman Bierstedt, the son of Walter and Martha (Ruhnke) Bierstedt, was born on June 1, 1932, in Whittemore, Iowa. He graduated from Cylinder High School.
On August 14, 1959, Norbert was united in marriage to Ruth Lavern Caudle in Chester, Illinois. Throughout his life, he made his home in Whittemore, Algona, and, since 2000, Spirit Lake.
Norbert was employed at the Pioneer Seed Corn Plant in Algona, where he worked as a universal laborer. His strong work ethic was evident throughout his years of employment. Even after retirement he spoke highly of Pioneer and was pleased that he had made his career there.
Faith played an important role in Norbert's life. He was active in the Lutheran Layman's League for many years. He loved Jesus and loved to share his faith with all who walked through the church doors. He genuinely loved people, had a wide smile and an easy laugh as he talked to you, making you feel seen and deeply cared for. In Algona, Iowa, he was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church, even teaching Sunday School for a few years. He became an equally devoted member of Immanuel Lutheran Church once he and Ruth retired to Spirit Lake. He demonstrated Christ's love visibly as he cared for Ruth in their later years. He loved her, served her, and always wanted to be sure her needs were being met. His life and witness brought much glory to God.
Norbert had a deep love for the outdoors and travel. He enjoyed gardening, camping, and spending time at Cutty’s Okoboji Resort, where he was proud to be a first charter member. Traveling brought him great joy, whether exploring by RV or visiting memorable destinations across the country. His journeys took him as far west as Colorado, east to Cherokee, North Carolina, north to Canada and Niagara Falls, and south to the Florida Panhandle. Along the way, he visited many notable places, including the World’s Fair in Knoxville and Mount Rushmore in South Dakota.
Norbert passed away peacefully on April 30, 2026. Although we saw him take his last breath, he never knew death, immediately beginning his new life in a glorified body with his Redeemer.
Norbert is survived by his sons, Bruce (Renee) Bierstedt and Bert (Heidi) Bierstedt; grandchildren, Amber (Joe) Salazar and Andrea (Teylor Hamilton) Bierstedt; great-grandchildren: Alessandra and Jalen; brother, John (Juanita) Bierstedt; as well as extended family and friends.
Norbert was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents and sister, JoAnn (Leonard) Hansen.
