Kathy Johnson

June 26, 1936 — October 8, 2022

A funeral service for Kathy Johnson, 86, of Okoboji, will be held Thursday, October 13 at 11:00 AM at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Spencer. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at the church. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Terril.

Katharina (Kathy) Johnson, the daughter of Adam and Elisabeth (Tewald) Szack, was born in Tofu, Hungary. She received her education in Hungary and Austria where she lived for five years and later graduated from Spencer High School.

On March 10, 1957, she married Merlin Johnson of Spirit Lake, Iowa. To this union, Jeff and Gary, were born. Kathy was an active member of Spencer Seventh Day Adventist Church and had many interests, such as bird watching, photography, drawing, oil painting and was a big Iowa Hawkeye Basketball fan. Kathy was an avid golfer, winning many trophies and had two holes in one! She and her husband enjoyed traveling to several U.S. states and Canada.

Additionally, Kathy, her sister, Liz and niece, Lisa made trips to Europe. The highlight of these trips was going to Hungary and visiting their birthplace. Kathy and her husband wintered in southern Texas for several years. After her husband's death, she continued wintering at her home in Texas for a couple more years.

Kathy passed away October 8, 2022 in Spirit Lake, Iowa at eighty-six years of age.

Left to cherish her memory are her two sons, Jeff of Spirit Lake, Iowa and Gary of Miami, Florida; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Adam and Elisabeth "Liz" Szack; her husband, Merlin; sister, Elisabeth "Liz" Flannigan.
