Karleen Slater

A funeral service for Karleen Slater, 77, of Okoboji and formerly of Arnolds Park, will be held at 10:30 am, Saturday, June 15, 2019, at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Interment will be at Lakeview Gardens Cemetery in Spirit Lake. Visitation will begin at 5 pm, Friday, June 14, 2019, with the family present from 5-7 pm at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Karleen Joyce Slater, the daughter of Abe and Maxine (Kinsman) Anderson was born on November 6, 1941 in Estherville, Iowa. She graduated from Terril High School in 1959. On November 6, 1964, Karleen was united in marriage to Allen Dale Slater in Terril, Iowa. The couple lived in Terril before moving to rural Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1971. Karleen worked for the Superior Co-op Elevator in Superior, Iowa, until their second child was born when she decided to become a full-time homemaker. She went back to work at Sperry in Jackson, Minnesota after the boys got a little older. She also delivered the Des Moines Register all around the Lakes area. After Allen passed away in 2009, she decided to move to Okoboji and live with her son, Neil and his wife Katie. Karleen was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church. Karleen enjoyed watching the television show RFD, going on Facebook, watching sporting events, fishing, taking rides and viewing the scenery. Most of all, she loved spending time with family and friends. Karleen passed away at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa at the age of seventy-seven. Karleen is survived by her sons, Paul D. (Colleen) of Omaha, Nebraska, Alan K. of Spirit Lake and Neil (Katie) of Okoboji; grandson, PJ; granddaughters, Amber (Danny) Needham, Cassie (David) Martin, Cat and Abi; great-grandson, DJ; great-granddaughters, Mariah, Tori, Izzy and one scheduled to arrive late September; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends. Karleen was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Slater; parents, Abe and Maxine Anderson; brother, Duane Anderson.
