Joanne Mickelson

A funeral service for Joanne Mickelson, age 94, of Spencer, Iowa, will be held at 11 am, Monday, August 18, 2025, at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. Interment will be at Barnes Township Cemetery in Linn Grove.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church.

Joanne Roselie Mickelson, daughter of LuVerne and Florence (Cooklin) Erickson, was born on January 16, 1931, in Webb, Iowa. She passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 94.

On June 26, 1949, Joanne was united in marriage to Vernon Mickelson in Linn Grove, Iowa.

Joanne was a devoted grandmother who cherished time with her granddaughters. She especially loved having them spend summers with her in Spencer—cooking together in the kitchen, enjoying special outings, and making an annual tradition of back-to-school shopping. Known for her warm heart, Joanne had a way of making everyone feel like family, and to many, she was “Grandma Joanne.”

While residing at the rehabilitation center in Spencer, she especially looked forward to the weekly visits from children in the community. The joy of coloring, painting, and spending time with them brought her much happiness. Joanne was a faithful member of First English Church in Spencer. She also worked in various retail positions throughout the years, always known for her kindness and smile.

Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Vernon Mickelson of Spencer; her son, Bruce Mickelson of Des Moines; two granddaughters, Mercedes Mickelson of Marathon and Madison Mickelson of Ames; and her great-grandson, Braxton Rholl of Ames.

She was preceded in death by her parents, LuVerne and Florence Erickson, and her sister, Marlene Taylor.
