Gail Handy

Apr 4, 1940 — Jul 29, 2026

A Celebration of Life for Gail Handy, age 86 of Terril, will be held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at the Lakes Area Senior Center in Spirit Lake.

Gail E. Handy, 86, of Terril, Iowa, passed away peacefully at his home on July 29, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born on April 4, 1940, to Frank and Gladys Handy in Spencer, Iowa, Gail spent his early years in southern Iowa before eventually returning to the Spencer area, where he built a life centered on family, hard work, and the outdoors.

Throughout his career, Gail was involved in H&S Roofing in many capacities, earning the respect of those who knew him through his strong work ethic and dedication. One of his greatest joys was operating Handy's Moonshine Kennels, where he combined his lifelong love of coon dogs with his passion for hunting. Whether he was hunting, fishing, or simply enjoying the outdoors, Gail was happiest when surrounded by nature.

Above all else, Gail cherished his family. Nothing brought him greater happiness than spending time with his children, grandchildren, and the generations that followed. His love for them and the countless memories they shared will remain with them forever.

Gail was blessed with three children, Terrie, Vicki, and Rodney, with his first wife, Bonnie. Following Bonnie's passing, he married Shirley (Werkhoven) Handy, and together they welcomed Kristi and Brian into their loving family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Gladys Handy; his brother, Robert Handy; his beloved daughter, Vicki; and his grandson, Matthew.

Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife of nearly 60 years, Shirley Handy; his children, Terrie (Glen) Gronau of Michigan, Rodney (Arlinda) Handy of Iowa, Kristi (Scott) Jones of Texas, and Brian Handy of Oregon. He is also survived by his sister, Cheryl Oliver of Florida; his brother, Gerry (Connie) Handy of Iowa; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, all of whom were deeply loved.
