A funeral service for Byron Sampson, age 91, of Sioux Center, formerly of Primghar and the Lakes Area, will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 9, 2026 at Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. A visitation for Byron will take place prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 AM at the funeral home.
Byron passed away on February 5, 2026, at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Byron E. Sampson was born on January 23, 1935, the son of Robert and Mildred (Hirt) Sampson. He was raised on a farm near Primghar, Iowa, received his education in the Hartley and Primghar school systems and graduated from high school in 1953. Byron enlisted in the United States Army in 1953 and proudly served his country until his honorable discharge in 1957, attaining the rank of First Sergeant.
Byron met the love of his life, Dorothy Pierce, at a dance in Spencer, Iowa. The couple was united in marriage on August 17, 1958. Their marriage of 65 years was blessed with five beautiful daughters.
A lifelong farmer, Byron took great pride in the land and the life he built for his family. He cherished time spent with his daughters, their spouses, his grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Byron also had a passion for golf and proudly recorded eight hole-in-ones over the years.
After retiring, Byron and Dorothy enjoyed dancing and traveling together, spending time in Florida, Texas, and Mississippi, making many treasured memories along the way.
He will be lovingly remembered by his five daughters, Jan Schimmer, Julie Pape, Jennifer Meyer, Karen Raymond and Karmen Staples; twelve grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn Tesch, Elsin Petersen and Shirley Ney.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Dorothy Sampson; his parents, Robert and Mildred Sampson; his brothers, Milton Sampson and Kenneth Sampson.
