A Memorial Service for Alan Riemenschneider, age 77, of Okoboji will be held on Monday, October 13, 2025, at 12:00pm at the Turner Jenness Funeral Home in Spirit Lake. Visitation will take place prior to the service from 11:00-12:00pm at the funeral home.
Alan passed away on September 1, 2025, at his home surrounded by his family.
Alan Frank Riemenschneider was born on Oct 20, 1947, in Kingsley, IA The fourth son of Emery and Ann (Paulsen) Riemenschneider. He was named after his Grandfather August Fredrick Riemenschneider (“AFR”). His Dad died when he was 11 in a car accident. His big brother Dick took him under his wing teaching him how to hunt, fish, play ping pong, only winning a few games after playing more than he could count. During his high school years, he helped on the family farms and couldn’t wait for the weekends so he and his brothers could go fox/coyote hunting (killing 3 fox in one day).
He graduated from Kinsley/Pierson High School in 1965, (holding the 100-yard-high hurdles record at that time) then attended Nettleton Business College in Sioux City, IA where he earned an associate’s degree in accounting. In his years after graduation, he enjoyed drag racing his black Chevelle (wishes he still had) at the local racetracks (Sioux City and Thunder Valley, SD, holding the track record for a while) winning 21 trophies in total. His only pit crew member, Rick Meins won one and his sister-in-law Mary won one of them. His brother Larry helped him keep the car at top performance. He served in the US Army Reserve 366th Finance for 6 years, receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1972. He worked at IBP, Inc. during this time. When his brother Dick had a farm accident in the spring of 1972 Alan worked the family farm, planting the crops that year. In 1973 he moved to Spencer, IA then moved later to Okoboji, IA where he worked for Eaton Corp for 30+ years as a financial accountant, taking early retirement in 2003. Later he worked at Pure Fishing and Polaris Industries.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his brother Dick, going to South Dakota on quite a few trips. He caught many walleyes over 8 lbs. and 2 over 9 lbs. to win the 1993 Walleye Opener tournament and received award checks from Yamaha. Alan was a member of the Iowa Great Lakes Fishing Club for a while winning numerous trophies and plaques. Alan has numerous bands from ducks and geese he killed hunting with his brother, best friends Larry Bendlin (deceased), Tom Willey (deceased), son Andrew. Alan also helped Dick win a Euchre tournament and trophy. Alan was a Life/Endowment member of the NRA. He married Gail (Dickinson/Graeber) on July 12, 1986. He and Gail enjoyed fishing and going to the casino on most Sundays, keeping track of their winnings/losings to the annoyance of Gail.
His children are Shannon Smith of North Sioux City, SD. Andrew F. (Ronarae) Riemenschneider of Fostoria, adopted son Jason Riemenschneider of Tea, SD, stepchildren Kimberly Froendt (friend Dave Wieczorek) of Grand Island, NE, Mike Graeber (deceased) (Paula) of Lakeville, MN and Mark (Debbie) Graeber of Clovis, CA. His brothers Dean of Pierson, IA, Dick (deceased), Larry (Mary) of Lawton, IA. He has 13 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, many nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives. Preceded in death are his parents, Emery and Ann, stepdad Carl Reinbold, brother Dick, and stepson Mike.
