Mildred Olson

Mildred Mabel Olson, the daughter of Sam and Laura (Rose) Dotson, was born August 6, 1914 in Lake Township, Clay Co., Iowa. She grew up on a farm, and graduated from Lake Center High School in 1932.

On September 11, 1940, she married Dewey Olson near Ruthven, Iowa. They lived in Des Moines, Iowa for two years where they were employed at Boyts making war supplies. When Dewey entered the Navy, Mildred lived with her parents until temporarily moving to Norfolk, Virginia, where she worked on a military base and could be near Dewey.

After the war, Dewey was employed at Consumers Lumber in Spirit Lake, managing their business in Superior, Iowa. They became the proud parents of a daughter, Sandra Jean. On March 1, 1950, they transferred to Consumers Lumber at Arnolds Park, where Mildred has since resided. She was the Arnolds Park City Librarian for ten years.

Mildred was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church, an active member of the United Methodist Women, served many years on the church board, an active participant in Relay for Life and served as church treasurer for 20 years. She was a past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and past president of the Okoboji Cemetery Association.

Mildred enjoyed ballroom dancing with Dewey. She enjoyed homemaking tasks including baking, canning, and gardening. She was often seen outside doing yardwork. Mildred was the happiest doing things for others. In her later years, she learned to graciously accept others doing things for her.

Mildred is survived by her daughter, Sandra Olson of Cape Canaveral, FL, her brother, Dale Dotson of Arnolds Park, IA, nieces and nephews, other relatives and many friends.
