Dorothy Boyer

Dorothy Boyer was born August 29, 1911 at Milford, Iowa, to Albert and Lena (Borth) Gottsche. Her family farmed near Milford where she attended country school then to Milford where she graduated from Milford High School in 1929. She worked in Jacobs Dept. Store for two years and also at the Amusement Park in Arnolds Park before going to Kansas City, MO in 1934 where she was a bookkeeper in Berkins Dept. Store until returning home in 1937.

Dorothy and Kenneth Boyer were married on May 17, 1937 in the First Methodist Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. They made their home in Lake Park where Kenneth had started a grocery store. She worked faithfully in their grocery store for many years until they retired in 1973. They were both avid fishermen and spent most of their vacations in Canada enjoying hunting and fishing, for they both loved the outdoors.

Dorothy was a member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Eastern Star, Lake Park Historical Society, Abu Bekr Women’s Auxiliary of Sioux City and a Charter Member of the Heritage Foundation of the Scottish Rite of Sioux City. She also served on the American Cancer Society Board of Dickinson County and enjoyed being Chairman of the fund drive in Lake Park for six years. She was a willing worker and always ready to help her neighbors.

Dorothy passed away at Hilltop Care Center on April 25, 2009.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband of nearly sixty years in 1997, her parents, five brothers, two sisters, one niece and one nephew. Left to mourn her passing is one sister-in-law, Gertrude Gottsche of Spirit Lake, twelve nieces and nephews and their families along with a host of dear friends.
