Funeral: Saturday, December 19, 2009 11:00 AM at Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Visitation:  Friday, December 18, 2009 after 4:00pm with the family present from 4:00-8:00pm at the funeral home.

Allen Dale Slater was born July 22, 1941 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the son of Mabel (Cox) and Ernest Slater.  He graduated in the class of 1959 from Emmetsburg High School.

On November 6, 1964, Allen was united in marriage to Karleen Anderson in Terril, Iowa.  The couple resided in Estherville, Iowa and operated Slaters Grocery for a period of time.  They lived in Terril before moving to rural Spirit Lake, Iowa in 1971.  He worked for John Morrell and retired from the USDA.  Allen was a member of the Methodist Church.

Allen enjoyed hunting, fishing, taking photos and spending time with his grandchildren.

Allen passed away December 11, 2009 at Keelson Harbour Senior Living in Spirit Lake, Iowa at sixty-eight years of age.

He is survived by his wife, Karleen of Spirit Lake; sons, Paul D. and his wife, Colleen, of Omaha, Nebraska, Alan K. of Spirit Lake and Neil and his wife, Katie of Okoboji; grandson, PJ; granddaughters, Amber, Cassie, Cat and Abi; great-granddaughter, Mariah; brother, Paul and his wife, Mary of Ogden, Iowa; sisters, Phyllis Schomaker of Lakefield, Minnesota and Sharon Sonier of Sioux City, Iowa; numerous nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Mabel and Ernest Slater; nephew, LCpl James P. Slater, USMC; niece, Jeannie (Sonier) Meier.
