Merle A. Welfare

Merle A. Welfare, the son of Jesse and Grace (Almond) Welfare was born near Hurley, South Dakota on March 3rd, 1918. He lived with his family at various towns in South Dakota until 1933 when the family moved to Iowa. Merle’s father died in 1935, then Merle and his brother; Kenneth farmed the family farm together until Merle was drafted into the Army in 1942.

Merle was an Army infantryman and served in the European Theater during World War II. He received a Purple Heart and other service medals upon his discharge in 1945. After his military service Merle resumed farming with his brother, Kenneth and sister, Maxine. His mother passed away in 1944, while he was serving overseas. Since 1964 Merle along with his brother, Kenneth and sister, Maxine farmed in Excelsior Township of Dickinson County until their retirement. His brother, Kenneth passed away in 1992.

Merle died on Tuesday, February 27, 2007 at his home in rural Milford.

Mr. Welfare is survived by his two sisters, Marie Cassem, of Fort Dodge, IA, and Maxine Welfare of Milford, IA, nine nieces and nephews and several great and great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse and Grace Welfare, one brother, Kenneth Welfare and one sister, Arlene Seaver, three nephews and two nephews-in-law.
