Vivian Maguire, 100 of Milford died Saturday, June 16, 2007 at
the Milford Nursing Center. She was born October 6, 1906 in Hartley
Township, O’Brien County, Iowa one of seven children born
to Isaac and Elizabeth (VanderSchoor) Speer. The family then moved
to the Austin Ranch, 7 miles west of Milford where her father operated
a large livestock and farming operation. Vivian attended Milford
Schools, graduating the 28th of May 1924. She married Edwin Maguire
June 19, 1930 in Canton, SD. Following the death of her mother she
lived in Milford with her father.
Vivian was a secretary for the Superior Coop Elevator for several
years and was employed for many years as a bookkeeper at Nielsen
Tire in Spencer. She also did income tax preparation. She was appointed
as a member of the Jury Commission for Dickinson County, Iowa. She
was a member of the Union Memorial Church in Milford, and an 80-year
member of the Order of the Eastern Star. recognized for her long
membership in 2006. She enjoyed her bridge club and friends. Except
for a few years traveling during the early years of her marriage
and a few years she and her sister spent in Colorado with a niece,
she had lived in her own home in Milford until moving to the Milford
Nursing Center in 2005. She was recognized by the Governor of Iowa
and the President of the United States on her 100th birthday.
She was preceded in death by her parents Isaac and Elizabeth; brothers,
Charles, Ira, and Cecil Speer; sisters, Madeline Skillingstad, Nancy
Rasmussen and Marselle Evans; and 2 nephews and 4 nieces. Survivors
include a nephew Vaughn Speer and wife, Meg, of Ames; 21 great nieces
and nephews; and wonderful supportive friends, Shirley Nattress,
Bev Sporrer and Marian Rasmussen.
