Marietta Cherry Whittlesey was born on October 16, 1934 in Emmetsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Orlan and Ada (Cherry) Hersom. She was raised and educated in Ruthven and also lived in Estherville for a time. On September 16, 1956, Marietta was united in marriage to Byron Whittlesey in Spencer, Iowa. The couple lived in Spencer before moving to Spirit Lake in 1969. They enjoyed spending their winters in Arizona. Marietta was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. She enjoyed genealogy, crossword puzzles, yard work, puzzles and spending time with her family. Marietta passed away at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, Iowa at seventy-one years of age. She is survived by her husband, Byron; children, Curtis and Kimberly Whittlesey of Mesa, AZ, Keith and Melissa Whittlesey of Mesa, AZ, and James and Beth Hopper of Apache Junction, AZ; grandchildren, James D. Hopper, Ryan Hopper, Nolan Whittlesey, Brock Whittlesey, Kayla Whittlesey and Heather Hopper; one sister, Marvel Wiemers of Spirit Lake, IA.
