Lois Matthiesen Lois Thelma Matthiesen was born on June 3, 1917 in Hartley, Iowa, the daughter of Jesse and Ella (Newkirk) Rommel. She was raised near Plessis, northeast of Hartley, where she attended country school. In 1935, Lois graduated from Hartley High School. Lois was united in marriage to Delbert Matthiesen on October 14, 1940 in Hartley, IA. The couple made their home on a farm near Hartley where together they ran a dairy farm. The family spent many weekends since 1949 in the Lakes Area, fishing and having picnics at their cottage in Francis Sites on East Lake Okoboji. They moved to Spirit Lake in the spring of 1987. She enjoyed completing word search puzzles, watching T.V. and visiting with friends. Lois passed away on November 28, 2006 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake, IA at eighty-nine years of age. She is survived by her son, Terry Matthiesen of Spirit Lake, IA, cousins and many friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert and her parents, Jesse and Ella Rommel.
