Lawerance Hass

Lawerance Chris Hass was born to Chris E. and Anna Von Holdt Hass on March 25, 1919 on the family farm in Excelsior Township, Dickinson County, Iowa. He graduated from Harris High School in 1936.

On September 12, 1940 he was married to Alyce Aileen Ringling at the Methodist Parsonage in Spirit Lake. Lawerance farmed north of Lake Park, south of Harris and

west of Lake Park. He did some carpentry work, drove truck for the Arco plant in Lake Park and for the Lake Park Farmers Exchange.

Lawerance was a member of the Lake Park United Methodist Church and was on the Church Board in his earlier years.

He was on the football team in high school and as an adult liked to watch football. When his grandson, Ryan, moved to Hawaii with his parents, Ryan gave his dog, Niki, to Lawerance and Alyce. Lawerance spent hours playing with Niki. He liked to work in his little shop and make things, as long as they did not cost too much. He was a big fan of western TV shows. Lawerance and Alyce liked to play cards and were in several traveling card clubs.

Lawerance died at Immanuel St. Joseph Hospital in Mankato, MN on Thursday, February 16, 2006 after having surgery to fix his badly broken leg after a fall.

Surviving are a sister, Luella MacNabb, Sun City, AZ; four children, Merril, and his wife, Kathleen, of Wessington, SD, Keith, and his wife, Robbie, of Oceanside, CA, Pamela McGrath, and her husband, Brent, of North Mankato, MN and Steve, and his wife, Lou Ann, of Sgt. Bluff, IA; nine grandchildren, DeAnna, Dustin and his wife, Kerry, Julie and her husband, Andrew, Jamie, Ryan and his wife, Kelly, Brandon, Angela, Lindze and Mitchell; and seven great grandchildren Christopher, Travis, Dylan, Taylor, Myka, Kira and Storm.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alyce and his parents.

The family wishes that memorials be given to the Lake Park United Methodist Church. We also want to thank everyone that called, sent cards and visited Lawerance while he was at the Lake Park Care Center.

Welcome Home
When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do. You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears. Be happy that we had so many years. I gave to you my love. You can only guess how much you gave me in happiness. I thank you for the love you each have shown. But now it’s time I traveled on alone. So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must. Then let your grief be comforted with trust. It’s only for a while that we must part. So bless the memories within your heart. I won’t be far away, for life goes on. So if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can’t see me or touch me, I’ll be near. And then, when you must come this way alone, Ill greet you with a smile and “Welcome Home.”
