Katherine Ford

Katherine Charlotte Ford was born July 1, 1914 in Spirit Lake, Iowa the daughter of Thomas and Manadocia (Lindsay) Watkins. She was raised and educated in Spirit Lake, graduating from Spirit Lake High School in 1931.

Between stints of teaching in rural schools around Montgomery, Katherine received her BA degree from Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa). She also did graduate work at Ohio State and the University of Minnesota. Katherine taught rural schools for four years, then taught second grade classes in Terril, Arnolds Park and Worthington for twenty-six years. Upon completing courses in Speech Pathology, she worked as a Speech Therapist in the Worthington School District for seventeen years. Katherine enjoyed seeing or hearing from the students she taught over her forty-three year career.

Katherine was united in marriage to Harold Ford on August 1, 1969 in Montgomery, Iowa. The couple made their home in rural Spirit Lake until moving into town in 1981.

Katherine was a fifty year member of the Montgomery United Methodist Church before moving to Spirit Lake. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women, P.E.O., Questers, Montgomery Homemakers Club, and a painting group. Katherine had a love of gardening, quilting, painting, crafts and writing. She had many good teacher friends and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States with them during summer school breaks. Katherine was a life long learner, enjoying learning about all new things.

Katherine passed away Saturday, October 7, 2006 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake at ninety-two years of age.

She was preceded in death by her parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins. Left to mourn her death are her husband, Harold Ford; step-children, Carmen Maynard (Arnold), and Jay Ford (Terri); four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
