Karen M. Brawner
On November 29, 1959 she married Orval Dean Brawner at the Little Sioux Lutheran Church and to this union four children were born, Terra, Brian, Shelley, and Carrie. The couple lived at Dickens, IA, Sutherland, IA, and Leavenworth, KS before retiring to Terril, IA in 2003. Karen retired from Wal-Mart after 27 years of service. Mrs. Brawner passed away on Friday, November 24, 2006 at Lakes Regional Healthcare after a two-year battle with cancer. She was an active teenager serving as a lifeguard, playing softball and bowling. A great joke teller, she loved to do card tricks and play card games with friends and family. People loved to be around her and friends called her “Mom.” She had an awesome memory for facts. She was good at recalling names and enjoyed Trivial Pursuit and word puzzles. She put her family first; served as their rock and a source of strength and affectionately was their lovable and huggable teddy bear. To her granddaughters, Kristin and Kathryn she was Grandma “Bum.” She would greet them, “Hey Bum,” and they thus became known as Grandma and Grandpa Bum. Surviving are her husband, Orval Brawner of Terril, IA, four children, Terra (Roger) Chapman, Brian Brawner, Shelley (Jim) Schuler, and Carrie (John) Metz; seven grandchildren, Michael Haskins, Christopher Reed, Jessie Ehart, Brandon Brawner, Kristin Metz, Kathryn Metz and Joshua Schuler; and four great grandchildren, Tessa, Kelly, Natalie and Colton. Survivors also include one brother, Marlin (Helen) Foote, three sisters, Eloise (Frank) Maiden, Sharyl Orris and Jerilyn (Steve) Streit. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
