Dr. Jack Miller

Dr. Jack Lynn Miller was born August 3, 1930 in Lake Park, the son of Dr. Max Eldon and Ruth Martha (Eckerman) Miller. He was raised and educated in Lake Park, graduating from Lake Park High School in 1948. Jack furthered his education at the University of Iowa where he graduated from the University of Iowa School of Dentistry in 1954. While attending college, Jack was united in marriage to Joan Shafer on June 22, 1952 in Lake Park.

Dr. Miller entered the US Navy in San Diego as a Second Lieutenant, serving from 1954 until receiving a Honorable Discharge in 1956. The family moved back to Lake Park, where Dr. Miller partnered with his father until Max’s death in 1961. He continued the practice until 1998.

Jack was a member of the United Methodist Church in Lake Park where he served as a Sunday School teacher as well as a member of other committees. Dr. Miller was very active in the community of Lake Park where he was a member of the Lake Park Chamber of Commerce serving as President for two years; was the Lake Park Businessman of the Year in 1985; was a Lake Park Town Councilman; Silver Lake Country Club, serving as President twice; Dickinson County Board of Health for ten years; a member of the Lake Park Masonic Lodge as well as the Abu Bekr Shriners; and active in the Iowa Alumni Association. Dr. Miller also volunteered for Lakes Regional Health Care and was a driver for the Volunteer Action Center.

Jack was an avid sports fan, especially golf, both on TV and actively participating, rain or shine, snow or no snow. He loved the Iowa Hawkeyes and the Harris-Lake Park Wolves. He and his wife attended forty-nine consecutive Iowa ~ Minnesota football games. Above all, his family was his greatest love and he always felt very blessed. His grandchildren were very special to him.

Dr. Miller passed away Monday, May 1, 2006 at a Sioux Falls, SD hospital at seventy-five years of age.

Left to survive are his wife of fifty-three years, Joan; daughters Jan Blaue and her husband Mark of San Antonio, TX; Josalyn Becker and her husband Donald of Brandon, SD; son, James W. Miller and his wife Rhonda of Burlington, Iowa; grandchildren, Dr. Barrett Blaue, Mitchell Blaue, Nathan Becker, Stephanie Becker, Paige Miller and Parker Miller.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruth and Dr. Max Miller.
