John Detlefsen

John Edward Detlefsen was born November 5, 1926 the son of Fred and Minnie (Burmiester) Detlefsen in Round Lake, Minnesota. He graduated from Sioux Valley High School in 1944. John entered the US Army on September, 1950 serving on active duty until September, 1952. He served in the Army Reserve for five additional years until receiving an Honorable Discharge.

He made his home in Lake Park where he worked as the parts and service manager for Jensen Ford for the next forty-eight years. In retirement, he worked part time at Northern Iowa Diecast.

John was united in marriage to Violet Lillian Davey from Dunmurry, Northern Ireland on Feb. 1, 1959 at Concordia Lutheran Church in Lake Park, IA. To this union three children were born, Valerie, Julie and Alan.

He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in Lake Park. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 371, Thrivent for Lutherans, Ford Parts and Service Club and Northwest Iowa Aging Association. He enjoyed gardening and especially had a green thumb for flowers. He also enjoyed his cats and bowling. He was generous in helping people in need. John was an active volunteer, driving veterans to the VA Hospital in Sioux Falls and an organizer for Dinner Date. His greatest joy, however, was his family.

John passed away February 22, 2006 at his winter home in Thousand Palms, California at seventy-nine years of age.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Violet, of Lake Park; children, Valerie Detlefsen of West Des Moines, Iowa, Julie Detlefsen of West Des Moines, Iowa and Alan Detlefsen of Lake Park; sisters, Ruth Jensen (Elmer) of Lake Park, Ethel Hoover (Ed) of San Bernadino, CA and June Schoelerman (Gale) of Lake Park; many other family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Doris.

An Irish Blessing

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm
Upon your face and the rain
Fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

The family would like to extend a most heartfelt thank you to all of our family and friends for all of your love, support, kind words and most of all your prayers.
