Gladys Hutchinson Gladys Mae Hutchinson was born November 23, 1912 at Spencer, Iowa, the daughter of Arthur F. and Bertha (Rudisill) Mauss. The family farmed near Spencer and later near Superior, where Gladys was raised and educated, graduating from Estherville High School in 1931. On October 5, 1933 Gladys was united in marriage to Frank Edward “Ed” Hutchinson in Estherville, Iowa. The couple made their home on a farm east of Terril near Twelve Mile Lake for eleven years before moving to a farm seven miles east of Spirit Lake where they farmed for twenty years. They moved into Spirit Lake in 1964. Gladys moved to Pullman, Washington in 2003 to be close to her daughter, Janet and family. Gladys was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake, especially in the Women’s Circles. She was a community leader in the Farm Bureau Women’s Organization, Superior Culture Club, and the Stitch and Chatter Club to name a few. She served as a 4-H leader for over 25 years. She worked in the Spirit Lake High School lunch room for many years. She enjoyed listening to music, sewing, quilting, gardening, cooking, traveling, and other creative endeavors that she shared with others. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Gladys passed away on June 16, 2006 at the GlenHaven Adult Family Home in Pullman, Washington, at the age of 93. She is survived by son Richard D. Hutchinson and wife Jan of Puyallup, Washington; daughter Janet Arlene Hiller and husband Larry of Pullman, Washington; grandchildren Steve Hutchinson, Linda Whyte, Cindy Hutchinson, Phil Hutchinson, Marsha Hiller, and David Hiller; six great-grandchildren; sister Mary of Hemet, CA; brother Bob of Bella Vista, AR; other family and many friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Ed, sister Ruth Lewis; and brother Charles Mauss.
