Grace Gillispie

Miss Grace Gillispie, 96, of Spirit Lake and formerly of Sioux City died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at Friendship Haven in Ft. Dodge.

Miss Grace was born November 12, 1909, at Marathon, Iowa to Herbert and Elsie Gillispie.  Following her graduation from Marathon High School she attended Kansas City National Training School for Deaconesses and Missionaries in 1927.  In 1941 she moved to Sioux City where she was employed at the Harriet Ballou Day Nursery, a project of the Methodist Women’s Society of Christian Services.  It was here she became known as Miss Grace.

Later Grace became director of the Harriet Ballou Day Nursery and Wall Street Neighborhood Center under the direction of the North Iowa Conference MWSCS.  When that neighborhood was eliminated due to flood control and highway projects, the program at that site was changed to the Harriet Ballou New Hope Center for the trainable retarded.  Grace continued as director of the new program until her retirement in 1975.  She then made her home in Spirit Lake.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William.  She is survived by two nieces, Phyllis Tillman of Bloomington, MN and Marilyn Yoon of Wichita, KS and five nieces and nephews.
