Grace Bauske

Grace Redmond Bauske, 83, of Okoboji and formerly of Ames, died at home Tuesday, March 14, 2006. Family services will be held at a later date. The body has been donated to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy.

The daughter of Newell A. and Joyce Redmond, she was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota on June 6, 1922. She grew up in Spencer and was a graduate of Spencer High School. She received her B.A. degree at Carleton College in 1945, and a Masters degree in Education at Iowa State University in 1973.

She married Robert John Bauske in 1944, and they were married for sixty-two years.

Mrs. Bauske taught at Ames High School from 1962 until her retirement in 1986. In addition to teaching English, Honors English, American Literature, Composition and Journalism, she also sponsored the school newspaper, the WEB, and the school yearbook, the SPIRIT. In 1994 she was honored when a brick inscribed with her name was placed on the Plaza of Heroines at Iowa State University.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and by her brother Newell Dean (Nook) Redmond. She is survived by three sons, David (Carol) of Pueblo, Colorado, Mark (Nancy) of Oklahoma and Clay (Lennie) of Weston, Missouri; and one daughter, Lynn Hogan (Ken) of Boulder, Colorado. Also surviving are four grandchildren, Matthew, Rachel and Catherine Bauske of Oklahoma City, and Jake Hogan of Boulder, Colorado; and one great-granddaughter, Cecilia Bauske of Oklahoma City.

A scholarship fund for Ames High School students planning college studies in journalism will be established in Mrs. Bauske’s name. Contributions may be made to Ames High School Alumni Association, noting the Grace Bauske Memorial Journalism Scholarship in the memo line, and can be mailed to the Ames High School Alumni Association, 921 Ames High Drive, Ames, Iowa 50010.
