Fern Louise Hackmeister Houchins was born August 31, 1911 at Coon Rapids, Green County, Iowa to Edward and Katherine Long  Hackmeister.

She was married to LeRoy Houchins.  The couple lived in Arnolds Park, Spirit Lake and Algona before LeRoy’s death on January  27, 1969.  She then returned to Spirit Lake where she worked as a school cook and volunteer at Senior Citizens.  Her great joys were her family and her church.

Fern died Saturday, October 21 at Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake where she had been a resident.

Surviving is her son, Jim Houchins of Arnolds Park; grandchildren; Mike Houchins, Laura Mendez, Mark Seiler, Robin Winterfeldt, and Jay Seiler; great grandchildren, Allysa Winterfeldt, Miah Winterfeldt, Mitchell Houchins, Nicholas Seiler, Javier Mendez, Issac Mendez, Luke Mendez, Zachery Winterfeldt, Janessa Seiler and Jayson Seiler and sister-in-law, Avis Hackmeister.

She was preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy Houchins; daughter, Cheryl Seiler; sister, Vivian Miguel and brother, Francis Hackmeister.
