Dorothy Tenney

Dorothy Lee Tenney was born on July 2, 1936 to Elmer and Hilda (Probst) Goetsch in Terril, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Terril, where she was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church. On September 12, 1954 Dorothy was united in marriage to Lakin Tenney in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Throughout their forty years of marriage, Lakin and Dorothy lived in various communities throughout Iowa and Nebraska, while Lakin worked road construction. They also lived in Gillette, Wyoming for thirteen years until they moved back to Spirit Lake in 1991.

Dorothy was the head housekeeper at the Super 8 Motel in Gillette as well as in Spirit Lake until her retirement in 1998. Because of her jobs, she was able to fulfill her love of meeting new people and hearing their stories. The focus of Dorothy’s life was her family and friends. Her greatest joy was being with her granddaughters. She loved playing board games with her granddaughters Amanda and Susan. She also had a love of nature. She enjoyed watching the different types of birds at her birdfeeders and while still at home she would watch the deer and other wildlife outsider her kitchen window. She also loved baking goodies for her family, jigsaw puzzles and playing cards.

Dorothy passed away January 23, 2005 at Lakes Regional Healthcare at sixty-nine years of age.

Left to survive are her children, Brenda Tenney; Sheryl Ogle and her husband Don; and Steven Tenney and his wife Heide, all of Spirit Lake. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Amanda Tenney and her fiancé Randon Johnson, Susan Tenney, and step-granddaughter Ashley Ogle; sister Deb Letscher and her husband George; brothers Wayne Goetsch and his wife Sandy and Rick Goetsch; sisters-in-law Alice and Irene Goetsch; several nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Lakin, parents Elmer and Hilda, and brothers Larry and Robert.

We Thought of You With Love Today

We thought of you with love today,
but that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday,
and days before that too.
We think of you in silence,
we often speak your name;
All we have now are memories,
and your picture in a frame.
Your memory is our keepsake,
with which we will never part;
God has you in His keep,
we have you in our heart.
It broke our heart to lose you.
But you didn’t go alone,
for a part of us went with you…
the day God took you home.
