Darrel J. Sykes

Darrel Joe Sykes was born on Labor Day, September 6, 1937, at Fort Dodge, Iowa to George and Evelyn (Hansen) Sykes. He graduated from the Terril High School in 1956 and joined the U.S. Navy during Iowa Navy Days.

On August 14, 1960, he married his high school sweetheart, Sandra Johnson, and began a 40-year career of farming near Terril. He also drove a Terril school bus from 1973 to 1993.

He belonged to Immanuel Lutheran Church at Terril, where he held various offices. He enjoyed young people, so driving the school bus, serving as a Boy Scout leader, and helping with Sunday School provided cherished memories.

Darrel loved the Iowa Great Lakes region and purchased lake property to enjoy the tranquility it offered. He liked to travel and had visited nearly every state. Due to medical problems, he resided at the Milford Nursing Center since 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Sandra, sister-in-law Suzanne (Vernon) Winterhoef of Aurelia, nieces, Jeanette (Mark) Hinkeldey of Alta, and Janece (Craig) Valentine of Fort Dodge, as well as other relatives and close friends.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorials to the Terril American Legion, Immanuel Lutheran Church, or to Camp Okoboji.
