Arlene Estes Arlene Phippin Estes was born March 17, 1912 in Spirit Lake, Iowa the daughter of Bert and Inez (Marsh) Phippin. She was raised and educated in Spirit Lake, graduating from Spirit Lake High School. Arlene continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College (University of Northern Iowa) in Cedar Falls, where she graduated in 1942. She received her MS Degree in Education at Drake University in 1948. Arlene’s career as a second grade teacher spanned over forty-five years and several communities, thirty-three of which were spent in the Des Moines Public School District. Upon retirement in 1977, Arlene moved back to Spirit Lake. On December 12, 1980, she was united in marriage to Harold Estes in Spirit Lake. The couple made their home in Spirit Lake. Arlene was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake, where she was involved in Circle. She was also a member of Eastern Star, Friendship Club, American Legion Auxiliary, Dickinson County Historical Society, Lakeview Cemetery Society and University Women. A life-long learner, she enjoyed reading and traveling. Arlene passed away Monday, October 23, 2006 in Spirit Lake, at ninety-four years of age. Left to mourn are nephews, nieces and many friends.
