Winona Cushman

Winona Rae Cushman was born to Foster and Berdina (Lloyd) Smitley at Milford, Iowa on May 16, 1933. She was a Terril High School graduate.

On May 7, 1966 she married Elwood Cushman at Jackson, Minnesota. Mr. Cushman died in 1995.

Winona was the librarian for the City of Terril for many years. She later served on the Terril City Council. She also was the school librarian for the Terril School District for a number of years.

However Winona’s greatest avocation in life was caring for her family. A special memory and activity the family recalls of their mother was her joy of collecting four leaf clovers with them. She had an extra keen ability to spot them.

Mrs. Cushman died Saturday, March 5th at Longhouse Residence in Spencer. She was 71 years of age.

She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Terril.

Left to cherish her memory are her five children: Kerry Soat and his wife, Linda of Mesa, AZ, Ronald Soat of Spencer, IA, Robin Schmidt and her husband, Mark of Everly, IA, Robert Soat of Peoria, AZ and Kay Determan and her husband, Mike, of Spencer, IA; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Survivors also include her brother, Allen Smitley and his wife, Donna of Urbandale, IA.

Winona was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elwood, son, David Lee Soat in 1983 and an infant sister.
