Richard D. Thunhorst

Richard Dean Thunhorst was born on May 19, 1950 in LeMars, Iowa, the son of Robert C. and Barbara J. (Raber) Thunhorst. After graduating from Primghar High School in 1968 he entered the United States Navy. He served in two Vietnam tours as a radio-man on a minesweeper and on the harbor defense team on Guam from 1968-1972. He graduated with a Business Degree from ILCC in Estherville in 1974.

On September 20, 1980, he married Mary Potter in Spirit Lake. They were blessed with two children, Trent and Jenna. Richard worked with Growmark, Inc. for 21 years and then with the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 3388 in Estherville, Timpe Legion Post in Spirit Lake, and a charter member of the Primghar J.C.’s.

Richard was very proud of his children. Trent followed in his footsteps and joined the Navy after graduating from ILCC and Jenna is a freshman at Minnesota State University-Mankato. Richard had a passion for camp life, vacationing with his family as well as joining the boy scouts on three trips to the Boundary Waters. He enjoyed football, NASCAR racing and military history.

Richard passed away on December 10, 2005 at his home in Spirit Lake, Iowa at fifty-five years of age.

He is survived by his wife of twenty five years, Mary, children, Trent and Jenna; his mother, Barbara Thunhorst of Primghar, sister, Becky and her husband Bob Vander Tuig of Spencer; brothers, Bob Thunhorst and his wife Heidi of Iowa City, Trace Thunhorst of Ames; his mother-in-law, Dora Brix of Spirit Lake, sisters-in-law Jaymee Rickman and her husband Tim, LaDonna Potter and Curtis Seals of Milford; nephews, Tyler and Kyle VanderTuig, Gus Thunhorst, Ethan and Wyatt Rickman, Douglas Burtch, Joshua Seals; nieces, Angie Edington and husband Jay, Janelle Larson and husband Derek; one great niece and three great nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Robert Thunhorst.
