Roy Byron Sams Roy Byron Sams was born on August 19, 1921 at Hesper, Iowa. He was the son of Quaker Church ministers, Lawrence W. and Sarabelle Weaver Sams. He attended schools in Iowa and graduated from New Sharon, Iowa in 1940. He entered the U.S. Air Force in October 1942. He served in Iwo Jima and Saipan overseas, and several locations in the United States. He was discharged in January 1946. After the service, Roy was a heavy equipment operator building roads and other related jobs. Roy served in many positions for the town of Arnolds Park including serving as Mayor. He was a member of the Gloaming Lodge in Milford; the Consistory 32nd degree, the Abu Bek’r Shrine in Sioux City; the Iowa Great Lakes Shrine Club in Spirit Lake, and Spencer Shrine Club. He was also a Lifetime American Legion and a VFW club member. Roy belonged to the Friends Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Effie Muir of eight years, and his wife, Florence Mansmith Sams of 44 years and a brother, Russell R. Sams and his wife, Mildred. Roy is survived by a sister Ruth Hargrave and her husband, Wayne of Colorado; and his special friend, Onalee Elston, step daughter, Darlene Maranell and her husband, Dick of Milford; step son Jerry Roger Coffman of Fostoria, six grandchildren, Denise, David, Deb, Don, Rodney and Ryan; seven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and many friends.
