Richard T. Hermanson

Richard T. Hermanson was born March 7, 1922 at Ruthven, Iowa to Theodore and Minnie (Henningsen) Hermanson. He was raised in the Ruthven Community and graduated from high school there in 1939. He attended Waldorf Junior College and also Iowa State University. Richard was drafted into the service in 1945 and was stationed overseas in Tokyo, Japan at General Headquarters.

He was married to Virginia Stillman on May 10, 1947 at Emmetsburg, Iowa. They farmed in the Ruthven Community for three years before moving to a farm near Terril. There they farmed for thirty years before moving to their new home in Milford.

Dick was very active during his farming years at Terril. He enjoyed working with people and served on many organizations and boards such as the Farmer’s Co-op Elevator, Farm Service, Farm Record Association, FHA, Fair Board, and County 4-H committee.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and served on the advisory board of his church. Upon retirement from the farm, he kept a close association with the farmers of the area by helping out at the A.S.C.S. office in Spirit Lake and also with Deanna Orwig’s Crop Insurance in Spencer.

Dick loved to interact with people and was always willing to extend an extra helping hand. He was a man of wit, generosity, tenderness and intelligence. His greatest devotion and joy was to his family.

Richard is survived by his wife, Virginia, three daughters, Barbara Schlawin and her husband, Larry of Sycamore, Jane Hermanson of Denver, Colorado, Sue Smith and her husband, Pat of Des Moines, IA, seven grandchildren, Kurt Schlawin and wife, Kory, Craig Schlawin, Nicholas, Madeleine, Noah, Elizabeth and Cecilia Smith, and one great granddaughter, Kristen Schlawin.

Survivors also include one sister, Ruthann Sayre and her husband, Bill of Park Ridge, IL, one brother, Andy Hermanson and his wife, Elaine of Ruthven, IA in addition to many other relatives and friends that will celebrate his life forever.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, Margaret McAdams and Vera Zeigler and one brother, David Hermanson.
