Opal Marine Atzen

Opal Marine Hemmingson Atzen was born March 9, 1905 in Round Lake, MN, the daughter of John and Anna (Olson) Hemmingson. Upon her mother’s death, Marine had to drop out of school to help care for her four younger brothers and three younger sisters.

She was united in marriage to P. Ben Atzen of Lake Park, IA on November 24, 1931 in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Marine, a homemaker, was at Ben’s side as his work took him from Lake Park to Woden, Albert City, Denison and Storm Lake before moving to Spirit Lake in 1991. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Lake Park, IA.

Marine passed away March 13, 2005 at the Hilltop Care Center, Spirit Lake, IA, at 100 years of age. She was able to celebrate her 100th birthday just days before.

She is survived by 2 sisters in law and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of over 72 years, her parents, 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
