Naomi Smith

Naomi Dorothy Smith was born to Oscar and Mabel Crosby James on July 16, 1908 near Royal in Clay County, Iowa.  Naomi and her family moved to Hope, North Dakota for a few years and then returned to Iowa to farm the Watt James farm at Royal.  Naomi graduated from Royal High School in 1925.  She attended Morningside College the next year and then came home and taught country school for one and a half years.  On June 1, 1927 she married James Smith who came to Royal as a Principal and teacher.  In addition to Royal, Jim’s career as Superintendent of Schools and teacher took them to Ayrshire, Dolliver, Lake Center, Superior, and Ringsted.  In 1962 they moved permanently to Spirit Lake.

Starting in 1939 Jim and Naomi spent their summers on Big Spirit Lake where they operated the Big Stoney Point boat livery and lunch room.  Naomi continued to spend her summers on Big Stoney Point through 2002.

To this union there were born 4 children: Keith, Paul, Corinne Sue and Mary Lue.  Jim passed away on January 9, 1986.

The focus of Naomi’s life was her family and friends.  Music was also an important part of her life.  She sang in the Morningside College choir, an a cappella quartet in Dolliver for many years, church choirs and the Spirit.
