Mary Handeland
She was united in marriage to Mark Handeland on March 17, 1972 in Estherville, Iowa. The couple made their home in Estherville until moving to Spirit Lake with their young daughter, Kari. In 1978, daughter Amy joined the family. They were divorced in 1998. Mary has been living with her significant other, Nick Larsen, in May City since 2002. Mary was an assembly worker at Polaris for the past eleven years. She worked as a nurses’ aide for several years as well as babysitting in her home. Mary enjoyed gardening, camping, decorating and making crafts. She also had a love of music, shopping, traveling, animals, meeting new people and helping others. Mary passed away Monday, December 5, 2005 at Avera McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD at fifty-three years of age. She is survived by her daughters, Kari Anne Handeland, Amy Jo Keifer and her husband, Chad; brother, Dennis Cook and his wife Linda; sister Margo and her husband Milo (Bud); significant other, Nick Larsen; other family and many friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Armand and Artis Cook, and infant daughter, Amanda Handeland. Mary will be remembered lovingly by many as a great mother, sister and friend. Mary Carla Handeland was born January 1, 1952 the daughter of Armand and Artis (Isler) Cook at Fairmont, Minnesota. Mary was raised and educated in Sherburn, where she graduated from Sherburn High School in 1970. She then attended Jackson Vocation for a Nurses Aide Certification.
