LaVerna Underwood LaVerna Pearl (Rusch) Underwood was born December 17, 1912 near Dion, Iowa (O’Brien County). She was the daughter of Arthur James and Gladys Lava (Schlarbaum) Rusch. She attended country school in Westport Township and high school in Hartley. She was united in marriage to Marvin Lewis Underwood on June 15, 1947 in Jackson, Minnesota. She was a housewife and mother, taking care of their two sons Tom and Vern. She sold goods at the Farmers Market in Spencer for two years before being instrumental in starting the Farmers Market in Spirit Lake. LaVerna was a member of the Spirit Lake United Methodist Church and Women’s Circle. She enjoyed working with flowers, gardening, chickens, and sold eggs for many years. She worked in Spirit Lake at Dutch Lunch and Chozens. LaVerna passed away Saturday, January 29, 2005 at Lake Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at ninety-two years of age. LaVerna is survived by her sons, Tom Underwood and his wife Della and Vern Underwood and his wife Rita; brothers, Wilbert Rusch and his wife Melva, Orville Rusch and his wife Evelyn; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Emig Alice Wagstaff and her husband David, and Delores Hanke; granddaughters, Michelle Tifft and her husband Brent and Amanda Underwood; grandson, Paul Underwood, great grandchildren, Nicholas, Elisabeth and Christian Tifft; nieces, nephews and friends.
