Lyle Poyzer

Lyle Poyzer was born on August 9, 1915. He was raised on his family’s farm in Spirit Lake. Lyle divided his career between public school employment, farming and entrepreneurial pursuits. Lyle especially loved teaching and farming in his home state of Iowa.

After attending Morningside College in the 1930’s, Lyle continued his education by receiving a Masters Degree in Education from the University of Iowa. Later he pursued post-graduate work in Education Administration from Iowa State University. He served as Superintendent of Schools at Crystal Lake, Laverne, Ocheyedan and Scranton. During the 1960’s he taught in Boone and in Des Moines.

He served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II when he met his wife, Helene. While teaching and afterwards, Lyle farmed in northeastern Iowa and later in Spirit Lake. Lyle was a member of the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake and a strong supporter of the Dickinson County Trails Association.

Lyle passed away on January 22, 2005 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at age eighty-nine.

Lyle is survived by his wife, Helene, resident of Spirit Lake and Tucson, and four children: John Poyzer of Colorado Springs, Rene’ Deerheart of Duncan, B.C., Canada, Jane Hicks of Minnetonka, MN, and Jim Poyzer of Des Moines. There are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
