George Meyer

George Meyer was born to Hulda (Jackson) Meyer and Frank Meyer on May 28, 1911, at Livingston, Montana.  At the age of 6 years the family moved to a farm near Sioux Center, Iowa.  George attended rural Sioux County schools until high school years at LeMars, Iowa.

In 1937 he was united in marriage to Vivien Schlesser and to this union two daughters were born, Betty Anne and Dorothy.

George owned and operated Meyer Machine Shop in LeMars and in the 1940’s was employed as a tool maker at Consolidated-Vultee in Ft. Worth, Texas.  In the 1950’s George operated the Trading Post in Spirit Lake, then retired in 1960 to his home near Arnolds Park.

George died July 19, 2005, at Rosewood Manor in Estherville.

George is survived by his widow, Vivien; daughters, Betty Anne and husband Raymond Haight of Laguna Beach, CA and Dorothy and Greg Sloma of Omaha, NE and Okoboji; grandchildren, Meghan and Brian Sloma.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

George was well known in the Lake Area as a gunsmith, fisherman and hunter.  For many years he raised and trained hunting dogs.
