Barbara Johnson Barbara Hess Johnson was born April 17, 1929 in Sioux City, Iowa the daughter of Lewis and Lauria (Zehnpfenning) Kennedy. She was raised and educated in Sioux City. In August, 1946, Barb married Dewey H. Hess. The couple made their home in Sioux City, until moving to Arnolds Park, Iowa on December 17, 1960. Barbara was a stay at home mother, keeping very busy with church and school activities. She was a member of the Rosary Alter Society at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Milford, an active room mother, chaperoned several band and choir trips, and did alterations of choir robes and band uniforms. During the summer, Barbara cleaned cottages for her in-laws at Hess’s Cottages in Arnolds Park. In 1964, she started working full time at Loraine’s Lingerie in Arnolds Park. They designed everything from sleepwear to intimate apparel. She worked part time at a local souvenir shop in the amusement park. She later worked at Style Craft Furniture MFG, where she was the upholstery coordinator. Dewey passed away in 1974. In April, 1975, she was united in marriage to Daryl D. Johnson. He brought five children into their marriage. They resided in Arnolds Park in the summer and San Benito, TX in the winter. In 1991, they sold their home in Arnolds Park, living in San Benito full time. The couple enjoyed square dancing and camping. Barbara was active with the craft organization and church, where she wrote three programs for Thanksgiving fellowship (1996-1998). In 1999, Barbara and Daryl moved to Sioux Falls, SD. On March 19, 2001, Barbara was admitted to the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls, where she enjoyed the people whom resided there and the caregivers. Barbara graduated in life Friday, April 8, 2005 at the Good Samaritan Village in Sioux Falls at seventy-five years of age. She has asked that everyone celebrate the graduation of her life, as she lived a full and fruitful life. She is survived he her husband Daryl Johnson; daughters Victoria Messano (John) of Damascus, MD, Valarie Pflueger (Steve) of Spirit Lake, IA, Leah Studer (Jim) of Milford; son Kevin Hess (Dianne) of Spirit Lake; sister, Bonnie McCampbell of Gramercy, LA; brothers Gene Kennedy of Annaham, CA and Keith Kennedy of Amelia, LA; twenty-three grandchildren and twenty two great grandchildren.
