Bill Colwell

Billie Dorland Colwell, the son of Ray and Rachel (Griffee) Colwell, was born on March 28, 1929 in Stanhope, Iowa.  His family moved to Spirit Lake where he graduated from high school in 1947.  He then graduated from Cornell College as well as Ringling Art School in Sarasota, Florida.

Bill served in the army for two years receiving his honorable discharge.  One month later, he was recalled to serve again through out the Korean War.  Bill was an artist and interior designer for over forty years in Sacramento, California before moving back to Spirit Lake in 1997.  He attended the United Methodist Church in Spirit Lake. 

Bill passed away on October 7, 2005 at the Hilltop Care Center in Spirit Lake, Iowa at seventy-six years of age. 

He is survived by his brother Jack Colwell of Spirit Lake; sisters, Mary Minkler and her husband Lyle of Prescott, AZ, Lois Christensen and her husband Joe of Mapleton, IA, Sally Bevington of Orange Beach AL; brother-in-law, Charels Shorey of Spirit Lake; many nieces and nephews.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Rachel and Ray Colwell, a sister, Betty Shorey and an infant brother and sister.
