Virginia McClain Virginia Smith McClain was born July 13, 1916 at Onawa, Iowa. She was the daughter of Nannie Long Smith and George Carl Smith. She attended school at Whiting, Iowa and graduated in 1935 as co-valedictorian of her class. In 1939 she graduated with honors from Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa with a Bachelor of Music Degree and a standard secondary certificate. Virginia was a member of the national music fraternity Mu Phi Epsilon. She was a choir member all during her college years, and was chosen to sing the soprano solos from “The Messiah” by Handel each year. She later proceeded to direct “The Messiah” some 28 years at Lake Park and four years at Spencer. Virginia attended summer school at the University of Iowa for three years; Drake University for three years; Morningside College for four years; and in Beloit, Wisconsin for one year. Virginia married Allan McClain on June 26, 1941. This union was blessed with three daughters: Nancy Anne, Linda Sue, and Bonnie Lee. Virginia helped build a strong tradition of music in our community, by teaching music in the public schools for a total of 36 years. She taught in Harris for two years, Graettinger for one year, Excelsior for one year, Sioux Valley for two years, and in Lake Park for 30 years. After retirement from teaching in 1978, Virginia was a member of the Harris-Lake Park School Board, serving as its president for two years.
