Roger Walters

Roger Wayne Walters was born on June 20, 1944 at Stickney, SD. The family lived at Stickney-White Lake area until he was 4 ½ when they moved to Freeman. Rog attended Freeman Public School and graduated from high school in 1962. He was baptized by confession of faith at Bethany Mennonite Church where he was still a member.

In 1966 Roger was drafted into the U. S. Army and while serving as a clerk in Germany, he worked part-time in a bowling alley where he learned how to run the pinsetters. He loved bowling even though he hadn’t bowled on a team for years.

Roger attended bricklaying school in Pipestone, MN. He worked construction for many years until he moved to Lake Park where he worked at and later managed, Silver Lanes Bowling Alley and Lounge.

On November 3, 1989 Roger was married to Vickie Snow at Lake Park.

In 1997 he decided he needed a change and went to work for Polaris in Spirit Lake where he was currently employed.

Baseball was his favorite past time. He coached little league and help other coaches anyway he could. One could sometimes hear him calling the game or being the umpire. He enjoyed teaching the younger kids the fundamentals of the game and hoped he had instilled the same love of the game in them. He soon became known as Father Walters to most of the kids.

Roger had faithful friends in his two dogs, Snaps and Zipper; they were his “buddies” and constant companions.

Survivors include stepson Jason Snow and his wife, Chanda; grandsons, Dalton and Tanner of Lake Park; three sisters, Judy Learing of Sioux Falls, SD, Val Burnett of Dearborn, MI and June Young of Pickering MI; a brother, Craig Walters of Watertown, SD; two aunts, five nieces and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two nephews, Dan and Darin Learing.

When I Must Leave You

When I must leave you for a little while,
Please do not grieve and shed wild tears,
And hug your sorrow to you through the years,
But start out bravely with a gallant smile;
And for my sake and in my name
live on and do all things the same,
Feed not your loneliness on empty days,
But fill each waking hour in useful ways,
Reach out of your hand in comfort and cheer
And I in turn will comfort you and hold you near;
And never, never be afraid to die,
For I am waiting for you in the sky!
We feel so sad when those we love are called
to live in “The Home Above.”
But they have but gone to prepare the way and
we’ll meet them again some happy day –
For God has told us that nothing can sever a
life He created to live on forever –
So let God’s promise soften our sorrow and
Give us knew strength for a brighter tomorrow.
