Ronald W. Harnack

Ronald W. Harnack was born to Rollie and Bertha (Whitehead) Harnack in Sheldon, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Sheldon, graduating from Sheldon High School. He served during WW II in the US Army Air Corps where he was an airplane mechanic stationed in Texas. He received an Honorable Discharge February 15, 1946.

Ronald returned to Sheldon in March, 1947, and began work at Iowa Public Service, where he continued working as a foreman of a line crew, until a heart attack forced him to take an early retirement in 1978. Ron was also with the Sheldon Fire Dept. and Special Police Force for several years.

In 1952, he became the father of Vickie Lee. She has been his pride and joy of his life. On August 27, 1970, Ron was united in marriage to Clara Hopkins at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They made their home in Sheldon until moving to Spirit Lake in 1979.

Through the years, Ron loved hunting, fishing, bowling and the crafts Clara and he so lovingly made. He enjoyed being with his family and friends, and adored their cat Boots.

He was a long time member of American Legion Post #23 in Spirit Lake as well as the Calvary United Methodist Church in Arnolds Park.

Ronald passed away Wednesday, November 4, 2004 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at eighty-two years of age.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of thirty-four years, Clara; daughter Vickie Werner and her husband Roger of Spirit Lake; granddaughters Cara Duncan (Chris) and Jodi Kennedy (Maurice); step-grandsons Mike Werner (Stacie) and Scott Werner; six great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Tremmel and Hazel Clark ; several nieces, nephews and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Steven Harnack.
