M.J. “Dick” Kuehl

Marvin John "Dick" Kuehl was born in rural Lake Park, Iowa to John and Johannah (Recher) Kuehl on November 13, 1929. He attended Westport County School, Excelsior High School and graduated from Lake Park High School with the class of 1948. As a child he attended the Evangelical Lutheran Church in May City, Iowa and was confirmed on May 21, 1944.

Dick was drafted into the army and served in the Korean War as a forward observer in the field artillery until his discharge. Once stateside, he joined Arnold Motor Supply of Fairmont, Minnesota for a brief time and then worked for an auto supply company in Estherville. When an opening emerged at the Security State Bank in Lake Park in July of 1956 he began his 43 year career in banking. In 1975 Dick assumed the helm of the banks in Lake Park, Hartley and Sutherland. He purchased an office in Spirit Lake in 1990 and built another branch in 1999 in Milford just before his retirement in October of 1999 when he sold his holdings.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Lake Park. As a community leader he was president of the Lake Park Community Development Corporation for 25 years. He was instrumental in the organization of the Silver Lake County Club, served from 1966-1973 on the Harris-Lake Park School Board and is a past Commander of the American Legion in Lake Park and was on the Lake Park City Council for two terms. He also served on the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital board of trustees for a number of years; was president of the Iowa Bankers association and served with the Iowa Historical Association. Having been active in promoting new businesses and industry for the community he was named Lake Park Businessman of the Year in 1965.

Dick was married to JoAnn McDowell on January 14, 1951 in Lake Park, Iowa. To this union four children were born, Kelly, Steve, Sue and Kevin. Dick married Joyce (Nebelsick) Forbes on June 30 1995 and they lived on West Okoboji and in Sun Lakes Arizona until his death on April 1, 2004.

Dick was an avid golfer and enjoyed his association with business, family and friends. Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Joyce, daughter Kelly and Verne Murray and son Michael of Ankeny, Iowa; son, Steve Kuehl of Flagstaff, Arizona; daughter Sue and Gary Richardson, their children Tyler Brady of Ames, Iowa and Mallory and Tess Richardson of Orange City, Iowa; son Kevin the Terri Kuehl and their children Haley and Megan of Alexandria, Minnesota. His step daughter Kim and Bruce Ihnen and their children Jacob, Elijah, Katherin and Isaac of Round Lake, Minnesota and step son Nathan and Danette Forbes and their children Skylar and Kilyn of Harris, Iowa. Dick is also survived by his sister Karen and John Dykstra of Osage, Iowa and brother Curt and Anita Kuehl of Lake Park as well as numerous nieces and nephews, and a host of treasured friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant grandson.
