Marvin Anderson Marvin Eugene Anderson was born to Oscar and Rose (Joachims) Anderson at Storm Lake, IA on April 24, 1932. He grew up on a farm and attended a one-room country schoolhouse through the 8th grade. Marvin was a 1950 graduate of Pocahontas High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 – 1955. On December 18, 1955, he married Garnette Ann Smith. He received his Bachelors, Masters, and Specialists degrees in Education from Iowa State University in Ames, IA. He began his career in education, as a vocational agriculture teacher in McCallsburg, IA in 1958, was the high school principal for 4 years at Lake View-Auburn Community Schools, and accepted his first superintendent of schools position in Ringsted, IA in 1966. He and his family moved to Milford in 1973 where he was superintendent for Milford and later Okoboji Community School District until he retired in 1997. While holding this position, Marv was instrumental in the passing of two bond issues, which included the construction of the high school auditorium, and the reorganization of the Milford and Arnolds Park school districts. Marv was a member of the First Lutheran Church in Milford, where he loved to sing and actively participated in Celebration Choir, the Men’s and Mixed quartets and various church committees. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, the American Legion, a founding member of the Milford Commercial Club, the Walt Whitman Club and Habitat for Humanity. He served on the Dickinson County Hospital Board, Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union Board and Council, Iowa High School Speech Association Board, Spencer Community Theater Board and the Lakes Art Center Board. In 1988, he was named Milford’s Citizen of the Year. He received the Iowa High School Athletic Association’s Administrator of the Year Award, the Iowa Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association’s Administrator of the Year Award, and the Area III Administrator of the Year. He was awarded the Iowa Governor’s Leadership in 1994 and was inducted into the Iowa High School Speech Association Hall of Fame in 1997. Throughout his life, Marvin loved golf, music and drama and his participation in many programs and activities after his retirement reflected this. He is survived by his wife Garnette; daughters, Kimberly Swanson of Boone, IA, Barbara Anderson of Plano, TX and Heidi Anderson of Houston, TX; son-in-law, Matt Swanson; grandchildren, Natasha, Philip, Andrew and Ira Swanson; aunt, Marie Bushman of Pocahontas, IA; brother, Dale Anderson and his wife, Jean of Burlington, IA; special friend of the family, Lynelle Schwein of Rock Valley, IA, many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews, and countless friends. He is proceeded in death by his parents, Oscar and Rose Anderson; grandparents, Peter and Rosa Anderson and Rudolph and Hannah Joachims.
