Harriett Zitterich

Harriett Doris Zitterich was born September 14, 1921, in Palo Alto County to Curtis and Inez (Larson) Olsen. She graduated from Seneca High School in 1939 and attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. In September of 1940 she taught all grades in a rural school near Burt, Iowa. The following year she taught in a rural school near Depew and Cylinder, Iowa. Harriett then taught several different elementary grades for four years at Seneca, Iowa. In 1946 she accepted a sixth grade teaching position at Terril Community School.

She was united in marriage on May 23, 1947, to Everett Zitterich of Terril, Iowa, where they lived and raised five children. She was a loving wife, dedicated mother and devoted member of Immanual Lutheran Church. She was a faithful member of Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and the Ladies Aid of the church. She taught Sunday school and confirmation classes for many years.

She was active in the General Federated Women’s Club and served as Vice-Director for two years and Director for two years for the 8th District of Iowa. She also served as the State Librarian of the GFWC for several years. She had a great love of reading, writing, history, crossword puzzles and poetry. She was employed in the late 1970’s as assistant librarian at the Terril Public Library and later as a postal clerk in the Terril Post Office.

Harriett died August 8, 2004, at National Healthcare of Maryland Heights in St. Louis, Missouri.

Harriett is survived by her children, William (Gretchen) Zitterich of Ames, Iowa, Stephen (Deborah) of Spencer, Iowa, Zoe (Richard) Roark of St. Louis, Missouri, Joel Zitterich of Ames, Iowa, She is also survived by three sisters, Alyse (Ray) Barker, Wanda (Bob) Jacobson and LeAnn (Jerry) Beaver; brothers, Gaylord (Donna) Olsen and Jerry (Helene) Olsen; two grandchildren, three step-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren, and thirty-two nieces and nephews.

Her husband, Everett; her daughter, LaVelle; her parents; an infant brother, Lowel; and a sister, Blanche Preston, preceded her in death.
