Dorothy Idso

Dorothy Fern Idso was born to Roy and Julia Waller on March 30, 1911 near Leon in Decatur County, Iowa. She graduated from Leon High School and Iowa Normal in 1928. After one year at Palmer College in Missouri, Dorothy taught school in Decatur County for two years. She also worked as a telephone operator in Leon. Later she worked as a manager of the Hyde and Vredenburg Grocery in Leon which was a forerunner of today’s HyVee stores.

In the mid thirties she moved with her family to a farm near Archer in O’Brien County, Iowa. It was there she that met Lloyd Alan Idso to whom she was married on September 15, 1940 in the Baker Church near Archer. The couple farmed near Archer until 1949 when they bought a farm near Hartley. They retired from farming in 1970 and moved to Hartley where they owned and operated The Coffee Shoppe until 1977. Dorothy moved to Milford to be near her grandchildren after her husband’s death in 1977.

During her years in Milford, Dorothy was very active in her church where most of all she enjoyed serving others. She was a longtime member and past president of the Garden Club, active in Dinner Date, and an avid card player. She received an award from the Iowa Department of Human Services for her work as a Senior Volunteer RSVP. She resided in Milford until moving to St. Peters, Minnesota in 2003.

Mrs. Idso died Sunday, September 12, 2004 at the St. Peter Health Care Center in St. Peter, Minnesota at 93 years of age.
