Donald L. Harris

Donald L. Harris was born to Emery and Nellie (Blackmer) Harris at Royal, Iowa on March 4, 1920. He received his education in rural Clay County. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. He was assigned to Company “C” of 893rd Tank Destroyer Battalion and was a Silver Star Medal recipient.

On September 30, 1945 he was united in marriage to Bonnie Lee Simpson at the Little Brown Church of Nashua, Iowa. To this union two children, Tom and Linda were born.

Mr. Harris died Monday, November 24, 2003 at Lakes Regional Healthcare in Spirit Lake at 83 years of age.

Donald farmed in his early working years, later he did plumbing work. He owned and operated Davison Oil Company prior to his retirement. He loved fishing, golfing and woodcarving.

Left to cherish his memory is his wife, Bonnie Harris of Arnolds Park, son, Tom Harris and his wife, Jan, and daughter, Linda Harris, all of Spirit Lake; four grandchildren, Tim, Leslie, Jason and Brent; and three great grandchildren, Ethan, Ben, and Charles. Survivors also include two brothers and their spouses, William & Vangie Harris and Marvin & Ardythe, Harris, all of Spencer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Emery & Nellie Harris, stepmother, Violet Harris, brothers, Robert, Bernard, Emery, Jr. and Kenneth; and sisters, Maxine Cleo, Sharon and Shirley.
