Dorothy Ann Frederick

Dorothy was born in Ashton, Iowa on October 16, 1920 to Dick and Dolly Adkins Landwehr. She married Theodore Frederick on February 9, 1943. To this marriage five children were born, son, Bill (Yvonne) Frederick, Milwaukee, WI, son, Mike Frederick, Worchester, MA, daughter, Kathy Frederick, Des Moines, IA, son Pat Frederick, Milford and daughter, Cindy Frederick, Milford.

Ted and Dorothy moved to Milford and purchased the Coast to Coast/True Value Hardware Store May 1, 1950. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

After raising her five children, she decided to start her career in civic activities, commencing with six years on the Milford City Council (1977-1983). She was the first woman to be elected a council person. Her City Council service was followed by her becoming the first woman elected Mayor for the City of Milford where she served five terms (1984-1993). She was very proud to have fulfilled her campaign promise to have street lights on every corner in town. As Mayor, she played an instrumental role in the widening project of US Hwy. 71 from Spencer to Milford in the early 1990’s.

She helped with the organization of Meals-On-Wheels program for Milford in 1981 and also participated in the start-up of the Dinner Date for senior citizens.

In 2001 she was named “Outstanding Older Iowan” by US Senator Charles Grassley for her civic work in and around the Milford area.

She was very active in the following organizations: 1) Charter member of the St. Joseph Catholic Daughters (since 1950) 2) Dickinson County Zoning Board 3) Northwest Iowa Planning and Development Board 4) Northwest IA League of Municipalities 5) Red Cross Blood Mobil 6) Milford Commercial Club and 7) Milford Senior Citizen for Milford Community Schools.

Dorothy always said, “Serving on all of the committees, I did not do it alone!” She valued the support from her family and felt honored to have broad support from many of the state and local authorities. With the “good living that we have had in the Milford community,” Dorothy served in her civic career with the intent to give something back to the community.

She died November 5th at the Lakes Regional Hospital. In addition to her husband and children, she is survived by 5 grandchildren, Todd (Nanci) Frederick, Naperville, IL and Brian and Lisa Frederick, West Springfield, MA and Adam and Jonathan Frederick, Omaha, NE; great grandchildren, Ryan, Megan and Jacob Frederick, Naperville, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Richard.
