Darrel L. Draper The Rev. Darrel L. Draper, son of Lester and Mary (Dodge) Draper was born at Sutherland, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1915. He died at the Milford Nursing Center on April 8, 2004, after a brief bout with cancer. Darrel was educated in the rural schools of O’Brien County, Sutherland High School, Buena Vista College, and Garrett Theological Seminary. His education was interrupted in 1942 when he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for 40 months. He saw service in both the European and Philippine theaters as a watch repairman. Darrel and Ruth Lawson were married on August 23, 1940 at the Lawson home in Excelsior Township. That same month, Darrel was granted a license to preach. He served student pastorates until his ordination in June of 1950. Darrel loved people and some of most effective work was calling in homes and his ministry to the sick and dying. He retired in 1979. Darrel is survived by his wife, Ruth; son David and his wife Carol Ann of Cedar Falls, IA; three daughters: Lyn Polk and her husband Mark of Belton, MO; Marcia and her husband Jim Ellenberger of Perry, IA; Carol Jean Cline of Lawrence, KS; fourteen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, his mother-in-law Letitia Lawson of Milford; a sister Eleanor Martin of Aurelia; two brothers: James and his wife Helen of Cherokee, IA; Ralph and his wife Eleanor of Wayland, IA; a sister-in-law Margaret Draper of Sutherland, IA.
